It’s important for all new drivers to learn tips and tricks for staying safe on the road as early as possible. Once you have been driving for a number of years it can feel as though you were born with the skill. However, the reality is that you not only had to learn how to drive, but you likely made a few mistakes along the way.

Tips for Learner Drivers to Stay Safe

If you have a new driver in your home or you know somebody in your family who is learning the skill, K&K Oilsandlube has prepared a post with tips which can help.

Are You a Race Car Driver?

It can be too easy to become competitive while you drive, always wanting to make it to the next light faster than the car next to you or ensuring that yours is the vehicle who is in front when it comes time to merge into a lane. While this driving style may seem innocent enough, becoming competitive while driving on the road can lead to serious problems. When drivers become competitive, not only will they speed but they are more inclined to make risky decisions which they otherwise wouldn’t. When driving, don’t worry about whether other drivers are going to arrive first, only worry about getting you and your passengers to your destination safely.

How Will You Reach Your Destination?

Shifting gears, indicating, turning the steering wheel, and watching for other motorists is a stressful enough set of tasks for any new driver. Add to that the task of trying to navigate to and through a new area. Instead of becoming flustered while you are driving and trying to navigate your way around, learn the route before you leave. In particular, look for any landmarks which you can use and any lanes which you will need to be in in order to make an exit, etc. Being comfortable with your route and what you need to do to get there is a great way to make new drivers feel more at ease and confident on the road. Distraction-Free Zone

Distractions are something which can happen to any driver, no matter their experience. However, there are steps which new drivers can take to minimize distractions while they drive. Each time that you get into the car and switch on the engine, consider these items:
  • Are your passengers settled in?
  • Finish what you are doing with your phone and switch it off.
  • Lower the radio volume or, even better, switch it off.
  • Is your car in good shape?
Considering the above points is a great way to minimize common distractions which can occur while you are driving. Of course, if you can think of any other distractions which occur while you are driving or which you are particularly susceptible to, be sure to include these on your checklist before you begin driving.

You Can Either Drive or Sleep. Not Both.

Until we reach a future when you can sleep in your car and let it do the driving for you, a tired driver has no place behind the wheel of a vehicle. Period. The easiest way to avoid being sleepy when you need to be driving is with planning. For example, if you have an upcoming road trip, get a good sleep the night prior, use a driver schedule to break up the task, and plan sufficient stops to refresh your body and brain along the way. Of course, if you feel drowsy along the way, don’t hesitate to safely pull over and take a small nap and arrive a little late to your destination.
